Food Safety: Ferrous vs Non-Ferrous Metals

Ferro – is the latin root for iron. Alloy is a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements.

Ferrous metals are alloys of iron and usually stick to a magnet, and include: 

  • Iron / Steel
  • 4xx Series Stainless Steel
  • Nickel
  • Cobalt

Non-ferrous metals are generally non-magnetic, and include: 

  • Aluminum
  • Lead
  • Copper
  • Brass
  • Zinc
  • Magnesium
  • Pot metal
  • Chromium
  • Pewter
  • Titanium
  • Mercury
  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Platinum
